ASSP updates on NY State OSH legislation

Tim Fisher, ASSP Director of Standards Development and Technical Services, sent an email to NY chapters about state OSH legislation. Click here to read the email.

Tim included the ASSP Public Policy – State and Local Government Relations dated July 14, 2019. Click here to view the policy.

Message below from Tom Weisbeck, Niagara Frontier Chapter President:

After a long hiatus, ASSP is finally finding and putting out pending legislation in NYS regarding EHS matters. It is worth looking at what is coming from the overactive and pernicious minds of our elected officials.

According to the rules of ASSP, we, as a Chapter have limited input (despite Mr. Fisher’s request to act as one body to influence legislation) to comment on pending legislation. It is supposed to be promulgated, shared with all Chapters, approved by the Administration of ASSP (Area Directors, Regional Vice President and ASSP board).

Not all of this legislation is beneficial to us or organizations doing business in NYS! The following are some of my observations:
A1939 – No opinion
S 381 – May be a good bill
A 1277 – Be careful what you wish for. This could turn in to a revenue generator.
S 1164 – Be careful what you wish for. OSHA will issue regulations on heat.
S 5259 – Affects NYC
A 481 – Be careful what you wish for. State occupational licenses can be a political issue and one that becomes a revenue generator. Lots of verbiage.
A 5889 – Be careful what you wish for.
S 3051 – Be careful what you wish for. This has impact beyond what it seems to be.
S 544 – Same as A1939

Keep in mind, you as a citizen, voter, taxpayer have a voice in how NYS Government operates. Use it.
